Mumuni laments on the plight of PWD’s

Alem Mumuni, Ghana’s para-cyclist has said that despite the modest successes made by People With Disability (PWD’s) over the years, they have still not been given the necessary recognition by society.

Addressing a press conference in Accra, Mumuni, who recently participated in the 2012 Paralympics Games and won bronze medal in the World Circuit Giles Villeneuve, Parc Jean-Drapeu, Montreal Race in Canada, said though so much advocacy and lobbying have been done, their economic, political and situations conditions have not improved. “We have been left out for too long.

Right from our homes, our education is sacrificed for our able brothers and sisters. “Again we compete on uneven grounds, though we are already disadvantaged. This reminds me of my participation in the 2012 Paralympics Games, where we competed against people who were well equipped and trained over a long period”. He lamented.

He said “the erroneous societal equation of disability with inability persons express in various local dialect to the attitudinal, institutional and environmental inaccessibility to education, training, sports and employment constitute acts of discrimination and exclusion against PWD’s from profitable human ventures”.

Mumuni, appealed to benevolent individuals and organisations to extend support to PWD’s to help them gain the requisite psychological re-adjustment to function meaningfully in society.
