Unattached Michael Essien could be heading to the Gulf with reports emerging that the ex-Chelsea man is in talks with Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad.

Essien is available on a free transfer after being pushed out at Greek side Panathinaikos.

The 31-year-old could re-unite with his former international and AC Milan teammate Sulley Muntari, who joined the Jeddah-based side on a free transfer.

Essien would like to prove a point he has not gone past his prime by featuring for another top-flight side.
