'Massive interest in foreign leagues killing local football'

The President of the Ghana Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi has attributed the lack of interest in the Ghana Premier League to the inundation of foreign league matches being shown across the country.

“We have foreign football which is very common on our TVs these days competing with our domestic football…and in those days we didn’t have European football…you can even watch Russian football, Azerbaijan football, Cyprus football…not to talk about the English league…and these have attracted the best players in the world.

“We cannot compete with European football because they have developed in many aspects. Their economies are better than our economies, in terms of infrastructure…we cannot,” Nyantakyi told Starrfm.

The GFA boss who is in his third term added that a lot of investments is needed to make the local league successful and attractive.

He said stakeholders must make it a priority and invest in infrastructure to raise interest in the local league.

“It is the responsibility of the government to build these facilities, just as government provides roads, good drinking water, hospitals, it must also provide attention to [building sports facilities]…if there is a policy that every 10 years government would build a stadium I think that it would help”.
