Amansie West teachers threaten street protest

The Amansie West District branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has threatened to embark on street protest if the government failed to restore teachers to the Cap 30 Pension Scheme by August.

They said at the last quadrennial conference held in January 2002 they gave the government a year's ultimatum to restore the Cap 30 but that had been ignored.

The teachers took the decision at a day's durbar they held at Antoakrom to discuss ways of improving education in the area.

Nana Twi Adjei-Baffour, Ashanti Regional GNAT Secretary, asked them to work harder to raise the standard of education.

"People always complain about the poor academic performance of pupils in public schools because most of you are not dedicated to the profession."

He appealed to the government to provide incentive packages for teachers, who accepted to work in deprived rural communities.
