London 2012: Ghana’s Olympic campaign comes to an end

Ghana’s campaign at the Olympic Games is over after sprinter Vida Anim exited the 200m event despite doing her season’s best of 23.71 secs in Heat 2 at the Olympic Stadium in London on Monday, 6th August.

Vida, who only recovered from a hamstring injury recently, knew she had to dig deep into her reserves to beat the tough field of elite athletes, all of whom had better season’s best records ahead of her, including the world’s leading 200m sprinter this year Allyson Felix.

Consistent with seasonal bests, seven athletes pulled clear of the Ghanaian after 100m but Vida eventually beat Senegal’s Ndeye Fatou Soumah to finish in 8th place.

The USA’s Allyson Felix in a time of 22.71 with Semoy Hackett and Janelle Redhead taking second and third position in a time of 22.81 and 23.08 secs respectively.

Vida was the country’s last competitor at the Games following the exit of Ignisious Gaisah in the long jump and the earlier withdrawal of heptathlon queen Margaret Simpson.

Three athletes, four boxers, a weightlifter and a judoka earned individual qualifications to the Olympic Games in London.
