Last gasp strike wins day for Olympics

Accra, Nov. 29, GNA - Accra Great Olympics lived up to their wonder accolade by beating Kpando Heart of Lions y a lone goal during their Week Eight 2009/2010 Glo Premiership encounter at the El-Wak Stadium, Accra on Sunday.

Midfielder Latif Mohammed scrambled home the match winner on the stroke of full time from a goal mouth melee to hand the Premiership returnees' their third win of the season.

The victory, though crucial to the chances of the Olympics did not come on a silver platter as they had to deploy all possible tactical and technical options available to achieve the much needed victory. Backed by a result-expectant crowd with their minds set on victory, the hosts started on an aggressive note in their quest for the opener to calm their waiting fans.

It was, however, the reigning GHALCA Top Four champions, Lions who made clear their intentions with burly striker Gilbert Fiamenyo's effort flying past goal on the quarter-hour mark.

The visitors were calm in their approach whilst Olympics were gritty; but their fans responded with applauds anytime they launched an attack. Two minutes from half time, Olympics were gifted with the best opportunity of the opening but striker Fuseini Ibrahim shot wide with only the Lions goalkeeper Stephen Ahorlu to beat.

Lions resumed the second half the more composed side but midfielder Gladson Awako and his striking partner, Kofi Nti Boakye made a mess of scoring opportunities that came their way. On 69 minutes, Ahorlu scored full marks by parrying away Eric Adjei's thunderbolt from a free-kick that deflected off Godfred Rockson to the dismay of the Olympics fans.

As the minutes ticked on, the game appeared destined for a stalemate, for Mohammed to fire home the match winner on the 90th minute mark courtesy a rebound in a goalmouth action to send the Olympics faithful's into ecstatic jubilation while the Kpando lads and their supporters went home a demoralised side. 29 Nov. 09
