Kwesi Appiah gets Akufo-Addo’s backing; set to renew Black Stars contract

Black Stars coach, James Kwasi Appiah, is set to remain in charge of the senior national team despite Ghana’s abysmal showing at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

Appiah has been under intense criticism after guiding the team to its worst performance at the continental showpiece since 2006.

The Black Stars exited the tournament at the round of 16 stage after losing 5-4 on penalties to Tunisia.

A section of the public has blamed the team’s poor showing on the coach and have subsequently called for his sack.

But according to a report by Ghanacrusader.com, President Nana Akufo-Addo has directed the Ghana Football Association’s Normalisation Committee to maintain Kwesi Appiah.

The report also revealed that the discussion the Coach had with the President on July 30, 2019 was centred on his long-term future.

The resolution from that encounter was that Appiah will be given a two-year extension before his contract runs out in December.

This means Kwesi Appiah will have another opportunity to end Ghana’s long-wait for a title at the next championship in Cameroon in 2021.
