Former Asante Kotoko defender Awal Mohammed has attributed Black Stars failure at the Egypt 2019 Africa Cup of Nations to the captaincy brouhaha which surrounded the team few weeks to the tournament.

Kwesi Appiah, head coach of the Black Stars, stripped off the captaincy from Asamoah Gyan and handed it to Andre Ayew which forced Asamoah Gyan to called time on his international career some few weeks to the tournament.

Asamoah Gyan after the intervention of President Nana Akuffo Addo rescinded his decision and took part in the competition.

Ghana eventually were knocked out from the competition in round 16 following a 5-4 loss on penalties to Tunisia.

Speaking on Zylofon TV on Friday night, Awal Mohammed who currently plies his trade at Al Ansar insisted the coach didn’t handle the captaincy issue very well which led to the team woeful performance in Egypt.

“The coach didn’t handle the captaincy issue well. I believe it could have been handled in a different manner because I think whatever happens Andre Ayew will definitely captain the team,”

“It somehow derailed the team’s preparations to the competition because I know how players react to some of these issues. You will see them laughing with each other but inwardly some of them weren’t happy about and it brings division if it happens so.”

Kwesi Appiah’s future as the Black stars coach remains in the balance after the team poor output in Egypt.
