Kwadwo Poku satisfied with debut game

New York City FC midfielder Kwadwo Poku says it’s a dream come true playing his debut game for Ghana in an international friendly match against Canada on Wednesday at the RFK Stadium in Washington D.C, USA.

The 23-year-old, who told Goal his desire to play for Ghana in August, came on as a second-half substitute for Jordan Ayew with only eight minutes remaining but he seems to have relished the moment.

“It feels good. It was my first time in the team and playing with these guys is different – although I'm from there, it's really different playing with guys you've never played with,” Poku told MLSsoccer.

“I know people back home – even my parents – will look at this, and it's something I've always dreamed about. It's been a long journey, but hopefully, intending to God, it's working out fine.”

The encounter ended in a 1-1 draw, with Marcel De Jong opening the scoring for Canada and Albert Adomah equalising for Ghana.

“I think it was a good game and the fans enjoyed it. I can say I did pretty well. So it's been good – we needed a win but we will accept the draw,” said Poku.

“Everybody was telling me, 'great job’. That's one thing they were looking to bring to the team, because they didn't have that type of guy who wants to get the ball and just make something happen. I think they are happy to have me,” he added.

Poku may be given another opportunity by coach Avram Grant when Ghana play Comoros Island in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifying next month.
