Kumasi celebrate Stars victory in style

Kumasi, Jan. 21, GNA - Kumasi Metropolis was thrown into ecstatic jubilation after the Black Stars earned a 2-1 victory over their Guinean counterparts in the opening match of the 26th edition of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) Ghana 2008 soccer competition played at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium, Accra on Sunday.

Before Sulley Muntari's effort that ensured the winning goal for the Stars, most of the sports enthusiasts in the city, even though sure of victory, were not at ease as luck eluded the team with many of the scoring chances missing target on a number of occasions. The jubilation took some people deep into the night with some of them gathering at open spaces and drinking bars to enjoy themselves, to demonstrate their happiness about the victory.

The few drivers who were on the streets sped around tooting their car horns and making irregular brakes while some of the fans who were glued watching the match came out in an ecstatic mood dancing and waving the national flag.

Some of the people GNA Sports talked to commended the players for their hard won victory and hoped they would continue to win their subsequent matches to annex the coveted trophy.

Some of them said a drawn-game would have been a problem for Ghana as the host nation and urged Coach Claude Le Roy and the technical bench to do more for the boys to improve on their shooting ability. Meanwhile, all is set for the Group C matches scheduled for the Kumasi Venue on Monday as the four participating countries gear up their training sessions.

The four combatants are Cameroon, Egypt, Sudan and Zambia.
