Terry Butcher insists Brentford are doing all they can to keep Jo Kuffour, but admits the striker will have the final say on his future.
Kuffour is out of contract this summer and looks likely to head for pastures new, although The Bees have made the 25-year-old their best possible offer.
Brentford's top scorer is hoping to land a contract with a Championship club next term after turning down the opportunity to join Huddersfield.
But Butcher is aiming to convince Kuffour to stay with Brentford, despite the club preparing for life in League Two.
"We would like to give the Brentford fans Jo Kuffour at the start of next season, but it is up to Jo now," Butcher said.
"I don't know if he will be our player in August, but we have given him a good option. It is right to push the boat out because he is an exciting player."
Meanwhile, Butcher has confirmed new signing John Mackie as Brentford's club captain for next season.
Mackie joined on a free transfer from Leyton Orient last week and has been handed the captain's armband at Griffin Park.
