Kotoko official wants GPL suspended

Asante Kotoko Express Editor, Jerome Otchere has called on the Premier League Board of Ghana to indefinitely suspend the ongoing premier league.

According to him, Kotoko’s tragic accident has put the Porcupine in a very gruelling situation and may not allow them to honour the remaining fixtures.

Otchere insists that, medical examinations have revealed the “team will need ample time to recover” and it will be suicidal to rush them back into active football.

He asserts that, even if Kotoko will require three months to recover, they must be granted that luxury.

In an interview with Accra-based Atinka FM, Jerome Otchere said it would be prudent for the entire league to be suspended for a while.

“As we speak, we don’t have a standing team that can play in the foreseeable future so what I want all our supporters to understand is that, what the team suffered is not anything to play with”, Otchere said.

“We must let the players have ample time to recover. The team doctor (Leat) has said they would re-examine the players by the close of the week and advise when it would be appropriate to return”,.

“The PLB can go on with their fixtures but in my personal opinion, I think it will only be wise to suspend the league”.

The two-time African champions were involved in a horrific accident when the team was returning from Accra and heading towards Kumasi after a defeat to Inter Allies in a league fixture.

Kotoko’s deputy equipment officer Thomas Obeng died in the crash whiles several key Kotoko players and technical team members also suffered serious injuries during the accident.

Among them was Steve Pollack, the club’s Head Trainer, who suffered neck and leg injuries and still on admission at the KATH Hospital in Kumasi.

Former Kotoko player, Godwin Ablordey, who is now part of the technical team, also suffered leg injuries and he is now reportedly using clutches.

The driver of the bus, whose name was given as Berkye, was also said to have suffered life-threatening injuries and is on admission at KATH in Kumasi.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko later at a press conference announced that the club had banned football from its calendar until further notice.
