Kofi Opare scores against Kaka’s Orlando City SC

The Ghanaian defender found the net as DC United secured a 2-1 triumph in Major League Soccer

Ghanaian defender Kofi Opare scored the equalising goal for DC United in their 2-1 triumph over Orlando City Soccer Club in Major League Soccer.

The Black and Red Men have been one of the outstanding side in MLS this season, and after their latest victory, having played 10 matches in the Eastern Conference, they find themselves top—three points ahead of New England Revolution.

Ben Olsen’s side didn’t start well against Orlando, however, and fell behind after 11 minutes when Cyle Larin fired a shot past Bill Hamid and his crowded area from 18 yards.

DC United enjoyed the best of the match—in front of over 12,500 at the RFK Stadium—and came back strong in the second period.

Opare equalised with 20 minutes to play when he demonstrated a fine leap to meet Taylor Kemp’s set piece with an excellent header.

Chris Rolfe then confirmed the victory nine minutes later when he met a delicious pass from Miguel Aguilar to poke the ball past Jamaican goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.

As well as confirming that United are the only side in the whole of MLS not to have lost a match, the club are also enjoying their longest unbeaten streak in eight years. Olsen’s side are also enjoying a 14-league-game unbeaten streak in front of their own fans.

Opare was a key figure for the home side, and while his goal will have stolen the headlines, his defensive contribution was also excellent.

Aerially, the centre-back was one of the dominant figures on the pitch, and he also demonstrated a calmness and a composure under pressure.

Earlier this week, Opare took to Twitter to acknowledge that while he was in the process of taking Canadian citizenship in order to represent the Canada national side at senior level, he was not closing the door on a future with the Black Stars.
