KMA partners football legends to revive juvenile football

The Youth and Sports Development sub-Committee of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), is collaborating with some renowned Ghanaian football legends, including Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah, to support the development and promotion of juvenile football in the region.

Mr. Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), said the move was a strategic initiative by the Assembly to revive juvenile football, especially at all levels of the colts league.

Other legends brought on board to assist the Assembly to achieve its mission were Opoku Nti and Opoku Afriyie, two former members of the senior national team and one-time winners of the African Cup of Nations (AFCoN).

Mr. Assibey-Antwi, who was launching the Assembly’s ‘Youth and Sports Development’ initiative at the Jubilee Park, Kumasi, said the legends would play critical roles in serving as ambassadors, as the Assembly sought for sponsorship from corporate institutions to develop grassroots football.

The ceremony coincided with the presentation of 92 set of jerseys and footballs to selected schools in the metropolis.

More than twenty colts clubs also received similar items to help resource them.

Kumasi had long been associated with juvenile football development and over the years had produced some great players for the Ghana Under-17 and Under-20 National Teams, which won world cups on different occasions.

Bayern Munich legend, Samuel Osei-Kuffour, Sulley Muntari, a former AC Milan and Inter Milan midfield dynamo, who all won the UEFA Champions League trophy at a point in the course of their playing career are among some of the great players from the region.

Mr. Stephen Ofori, convener for the Youth and Sports Development sub-Committee, said more than one million Ghana Cedis was being raised for the implementation of the project, saying it involved development of community parks, organization of colts football gala and registration of colts teams on-line.

Coach Kwasi Appiah, who was the Guest Speaker for the programme, lauded the Assembly for the initiative and promised to work assiduously in helping to raise future stars for the nation.

The ceremony had in attendance representatives of the National Sports Authority, colts clubs and some notable sports personalities.
