Former Accra Hearts of Oak and Sekondi Eleven Wise striker, John Antwi has signed for Egyptian giants Ismaily, but the 20 year old is still waiting to play his first game for the club following the indefinite suspension of the Egyptian Premier League.
More than 70 people were killed in February 's stadium riots in Port Said described as the worst in Egypt's footballing history that led to the suspension of the league. They also sparked riots in Cairo during which a further 16 people were killed.
A planned resumption of the league in September had to be postponed because Al Ahly fans insisted they want justice, throwing the league’s future in limbo as even authorities are unsure when it will kick start after nine months.
Antwi who has scored 5 goals in 7 pre-season games for the Egyptian outfit and was key as Hearts lifted the 2010/11 pre-season Top 4 trophy in Ghana, made the switch from Accra based third tier side Dreams FC, the same club that nurtured former Kotoko left back Baba Abdul Rahman.
He is targeting success in Egypt to open the way for a move to a top European club. But first he must play for Ismaily and the continued league no- show is driving the Ghanaian youngster mad with anxiety.
“I came here to play so the suspension of the league is not good news at all. They are saying next month and I hope so because I’m very desperate, I just can’t wait for the league to start,” Antwi told 90 MINUTES in a chat from his Ismailia base. He added: “My main target is to win the domestic league with Ismaily and go to Africa with them.
“Sure, I will just work hard here and keep my fingers crossed but trust me, my target is Europe after the first year. I will love to play in England or Germany,”
