IPMC Hockey League – Reformers are 2008 Hockey Ladies Champions

Reformers of Ghana Prisons Service put up a spirited performance to beat Police in the last round of matches in the IPMC Women Hockey League. Not even the current form of Police could prevent Reformers fluffing their lines to win the day. Reformers came up good with a two-goal cushion in dethroning CEPS as league champions. This success has not come overnight, having brought in new players in their quest for glory.

In the other match, CEPS who had come into their final game against Extinguishers with hope of beating the Fire ladies after taking an earlier lead, were given a shock as the fire they brought into the game was extinguished by the Fire ladies who showed glimpses of their battling qualities. The Fire ladies did not slow down their attack after getting the equalizer but kept probing for a winner which they got from a fierce strike in the latter stages of the match. The win moved Extinguishers to second place in the League above CEPS who finished third.

Financiers cruised to victory over Citizens in the Senior League. A draw was perhaps predictable, but few will have bet on Citizens slumping to their heaviest defeat this season. Financiers showed no signs of letting up as they continue to lead the title race, keeping their hope of winning the league alive. After wasting little time creating chances, they found the target from close range in the early part of the match and continued the rampage beating Citizens 5-1.

In the other match Eric ‘Dada’ Mainoo powered Multistix to a 4-0 win over Veterans. The striker’s brace stunned Veterans into silence and kept his side within touching distance of the league leaders. Veterans would have a welcomed draw against their opponents, but Multistix sparked a spell of pressure on their opponents bagging more goals to keep their title chase in check. In the A-league, Golden Sticks lost by a lone goal to defending champions Exchequers and makes it difficult for them to keep pace with leaders CEPS who played Ambassadors in a non-scoring match. With Golden Sticks’ loss and with last round of matches remaining in the regular season, things look clear-cut for runaway leaders CEPS to annex the A-league title. However, teams in second to fourth positions are equally matched and thus make the final matches in the A-league tension packed encounters.
