Accra, Oct. 20, GNA – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Association of the National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), have directed the Benson Tongo Baba-led Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) to subject the supposed controversial election guidelines for a review by the General Assembly ahead of Congress on October 29.
The General Assembly of the GOC, the highest decision making body, is made up of representatives of the various accredited Federations/Associations.
In a strong worded letter jointly signed by Pere Miro, IOC National Olympic Committee's (NOC) Relationship Director and General Lassana Palenfo, President of ANOCA, it said “we strongly recommend that, you urgently convene a meeting of all NOC members prior to the elective General Assembly on October 29 to review and agree on the electoral process, which would be implemented and to settle any issues in advance.
“If not such issues should be dealt with and resolved by the GOC General Assembly on October 29 before the election starts”. The letter added.
The letter cited by GNA Sports said the IOC would consider as final, decisions made by the General Assembly in accordance with the NOC's statutes and the Olympic Charter.
According to the letter, the two bodies have appointed Joao Manuel Da Costa Alegre Afonso, Second Vice President of ANOCA to serve as an observer at the Elective General Assembly.
The GOC has for the past weeks been engaged in a dispute over the controversial election guidelines drafted for the elections.
The guidelines were vehemently rejected by the members of the various Associations/Federations whilst the IOC also directed the GOC to review portions of the guidelines, which it described as restrictive.
