Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has revealed the extraordinary circumstances under which he completed one of the early moves of his career, disclosing that he signed his contract with French side Stade Rennais while lying on a hospital bed in Spain.

Speaking in an interview on Ghana Police TV on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Gyan recounted how injury drama during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations played a key role in shaping his transfer situation at the time.

According to him, he arrived at the tournament already carrying an injury, which later required surgery during his spell with Italian side Udinese.

“When I came to the 2008 AFCON, I was injured. I took that injury back to Udinese and I was operated on. The doctors told me I would be out for about five months,” Gyan explained.

He added that despite his condition, Rennes remained determined to secure his signature and with Udinese, realizing he would be unavailable for a long period, eventually accepted Rennes’ offer.

“Even when I was operated on, Rennes were still insisting on signing me. I signed my Rennes contract on a hospital bed in Spain,” he added.

After putting pen to paper, Gyan was moved to France to continue his rehabilitation.

The former Black Stars captain signed for Rennes in 2008, spending three seasons at the French club before moving to the Premier League in 2010 after a stellar performance in the 2010 World Cup, where he led the Black Stars to the quarter-finals.
