Veteran Ghanaian defender Godfred Saka claims he left Karela United because the club could not longer guarantee the benefits he was getting, following the passing of Club President David Cobbina Brigidi.

The former Bayelsa Central Constituency Senator passed on in Sep 2018 in London following a short illness.

Before his death he was the main financier of Karela United and played a prominent role in their climb to the elite division of Ghana football. He made the club the envy of most top footballers.

However his death affected the club gravely as they failed to retain most of their stars.

Godfred Saka, one of the stellar names who joined during the good times has revealed he decided to leave after indications were clear the club would struggle to keep up with the wage structure and financial entitlements to players.

He told Angel FM in an interview that “when our club president died, the management of Karela United informed us that they cannot pay the salaries given us.

“The decision was to do pay cut by paying every player GHC 500.00 and also the rooms that we use to sleep one in a room will now be double in room.

This is the only reason I left Karela United” he concluded.

After leaving Karela, Godfred Saka joined Great Olympics. The two time league winner with Aduana Stars was recently releases by the club.
