I knew I was going to suffer the same fate as Asamoah Gyan - Edward Sarpong

Black Meteors defender Edward Sarpong says he was fully aware of the repercussions of that decisive penalty miss against South Africa in the third place playoff game at the just ended U23 AFCON.

“When I missed that kick I was distraught because I’ve seen that scenario before, it happened to Asamoah Gyan and I saw how people reacted to him and the others who missed in similar circumstances for Ghana so I knew immediately how it was going to be for me as well.

“I knew I was going to be a subject of mockery for sure. But there is one thing we should know, no one ever takes a penalty with the intention of missing,” he said in an interview with Adom FM.

The 22 year old also revealed the unfortunate ordeal he and his family are going through at the moment.

“I’ve been insulted massively in my area and it has even affected my family.

“When my sisters go out they are verbally attacked because everyone in our area knows they are my sisters.

“My mum can’t go out because anytime she comes out she’s insulted and she was even scared.

“She asked me not to even go out again because she felt people will attack me,” he disclosed

Sarpong’s poor kick which galloped over the bar to the shock of many Ghanaians could have seen Ghana qualify for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games but Ghana will have to wait until 2024 to begin the search for another slot to appear at the international event.
