Issa Hayatou is set for his eighth term in office as president of Africa’s football governing body (CAF) as one of his strongest backers Kwesi Nyantakyi has revealed a decision to scrap age-limits for leaders in football.

The Executive Committee of CAF is considering adopting the FIFA decision banning age limits for people contesting positions within the world governing body when Africa’s football officials meet in April.

CAF has an age limit of 70 years for those seeking power in the confederation which means those above that age cannot stand elections to lead Africa’s governing body.

Hayatou’s current term of office expires in 2017 when he would be 70 which means he won’t be able to stand for re-election.

However, Hayatou’s allies are taking inspiration from a similar change at the Fifa level, where there are now no age-restrictions in contesting the presidency following a recent vote by members.

“Fifa does not have age limits for its committee members so CAF wants to bring this in line with them,” executive committee member Kwesi Nyantakyi, also the FA boss of Ghana, said.

This eighth term would keep the Cameroonian – who has been in charge since 1987 – in office until 2021 and the change is expected to be made at the body’s next congress in Cairo in April.
