Ghana's Weightlifter optimistic

...of prospect at Commonwealth games

Albert Abotsi, one of three Ghanaians set to make history as the first to represent the country in weightlifting at the up-coming Commonwealth Games set for Manchester in August, is optimistic of his chances of reaching the medal stage of the competition.

In an interview with the GNA Sports in Accra, Abotsi said even though the lack proper equipment handicaps his training, he has adequate training with substitutes equipment.

"I am currently lifting 100 pounds of raw metal whiles the current world record stands at 80 pounds giving me the hope of achieving something good at the Manchester games", he told the GNA.

Abotsi said he lifts 140 pounds under the "clean and jerk" classifications adding, "it's not bad for a beginner at my level". The former "power lifter" turned weightlifter said the conversion was difficult at the initial stages but once he realised the potential, the sky has become his limit.

Abotsi said the Commonwealth Games would be used as a learning ground for the All African Games scheduled for Nigeria where he hopes to go for the gold.

The 24-year-old weightlifter urged everybody interested to do away with vices like smoking and have a clear conscience to pursue the sport.
