Ghana must become dominant again - Akunnor

C.K Akunnor has urged the Ghana FA to put structures right to make Ghana a formidable force in youth football once more again.

The former Black Stars captain is at pains over the absence of the Black Starlets at the FIFA U17 World Cup currently ongoing in Chile.

Ghana failed to qualify for the world showpiece having been disqualified from taking part in the African contest for fielding an over-aged player.

The Black Starlets used to be a dominant force at this level in the World Cup, winning the title on two occasions – in 1991 and 1993 in Italy and Ecuador respectively.

CK Akunnor who is now a coach of second tier Ghanaian club Dreams FC admits it’s sad not seeing Ghana competing favourably at this level and has charged the Ghana FA to put things right.

“It’s sad not seeing Ghana there and that tells you we need to work on the structures,” he told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“We used to dominate this competition but now we are not there. The GFA have to work on the structures to ensure we return to the top.”

Nigeria and Mali are currently representing Africa well at the championships having made it through to the quarter finals where they face Brazil and Croatia respectively.
