Ghana's number one goalkeeper Razak Brimah still enjoys wide popularity among football fans in the country. No doubt!
Despite missing his spot kick in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations penalty shootout that sealed the Black Stars’ fate against eventual winners Cote D’Ivoire, the 28-year-old Cordoba shot-stopper is still preferred at the post ahead of home-based duo Fatau Dauda and new boy Richard Ofori.
In a recent Goal poll, more than half of the participants believe Brimah remains the best goalkeeper the country can boast of at the moment and thus should be used in the upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifiers ahead of his colleagues.
Brimah, who will likely start against Comoros on Friday, won 53 % of the vote. However, it is difficult to know the criteria used by voters to choose him, as he has only appeared four times this season for his Spanish Segunda Division side Cordoba CF.
Whereas, Dauda and Ofori, although plying their trade in the Ghana Premier League, have been consistent in action with their respective clubs Ashanti Gold and Wa All Stars.
Perhaps, experience and exposure weighed in favour of Brimah.
The stunning revelation of the poll result is the rise of Richard Ofori, who has been the talk of town since he earned his first call up to the Black Stars ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.
The 22-year-old, who manned the post for Ghana home based team during the African Nations Championship qualifiers, scored better than Fatau Dauda, onetime Ghana’s first choice.
Ofori raked in 28.3 % to finish second behind Brimah while Dauda got 21.2 %.
It is no good news for the Ashgold goalkeeper, who indicated recently that he would fight to regain his first spot status, which he lost few years ago.
Ofori could be the next man to be tested at the post by coach Avram Grant ahead of Dauda, especially with the growing calls on the Israeli to give local players a chance.
However, the time and situation for such experiment might be in the near future and not during the upcoming qualifiers on which Grant would definitely not take a chance.
