Striker Jordan Ayew considers the draw with Benin in Ghana’s opening game at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations as a win.

A ten-man Black Stars were held to a 2-2 draw by the Squirrels in the second Group F match on Tuesday in Ismaily.

Ghana literally had to hold onto the draw having ceded it’s lead following the sending off of defender John Boye for second booking presumably for delaying play.

Captain Andre Ayew pulled Ghana level in the 9th minute after Mickael Pote raced Benin into a shocking lead just after two minutes.

Jordan Ayew then scored a stunning goal to put Ghana in the lead in the 42nd minute.

The efforts of the Black Stars were undone when Boye was sent off ten minutes into the second half as Benin drew level in the 62nd minute with Pote completing a brace.

The result left the expectant Ghana crowd highly disappointed but Jordan Ayew who was later adjudged the MVP believes it’s a win for Ghana considering the circumstances.

“We had wanted to win but for us this [the draw] feels like a win because of the red card,” he said after the match.

Ghana will now have to regroup quickly face defending champions Cameroon in the group’s second game on Saturday.

Cameroon currently lead the group following their 2-0 win over Guinea Bissau in the group’s opening game.
