Ghana clubs threaten league boycott

DUROSIMI THOMAS, ACCRA
The new season in Ghana is being threatened by the clubs' threat to withdraw from the league. They have a set a deadline of Sunday for football control to be removed from the hands of Sports Minister Enoch Mensah.
A meeting of clubs Accra accused Mensah of interfering in the running of the league and for bringing the game into a state of chaos.
Among the issues, the clubs want the Ghana Football Association to control the share of gate income, because some clubs benefit little from ticket sales and are running heavy losses because the Ministry claims so many free tickets.
The clubs also want special seating areas for their representatives and tighter stadium security after an assault on Hearts of Oak chairman Harry Zakkour and an official of Obuasi Goldfields by uniformed men last week.
Mensah has been asked to reduce the heavy military presence and other agencies from football events to reduce spending on security personnel.
However, GFA leader Alhaji Jawula opposes the clubs' threat to pull out of the new season which started on March 12. The GFA will meet to decide whether to ban teams who fail to play on Sunday.
