Essipong (W/R), Oct. 11, GNA - Ghana Black Stars on Saturday defeated the Crocodiles of Lesotho 3-0 in a second round qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup and the African Cup of Nations Tournament at the Essipong stadium, near Sekondi.
The score-line would have been much higher if the Stars had utilized many scoring chances that came their way. Sule Muntari who was unmarked opened the score line in the 19th minute after outwitting the defence in the penalty area of the opponents.
In the 23rd minute, Junior Agogo made it second while Matthew Amoah sealed the doom of the Crocodiles with a third goal in the 85th minute as the packed crowd yearned for more goals.
The first half was largely dominated by the Stars after taking control of the game from the opponents.
Although the Stars were on top of proceedings, the Crocodiles gave a good account of themselves and matched the Stars boot-for-boot. The Stars maintained their dominance as the match progressed and could have increased the tally if the attackers took their chances. The Crocodiles tried to take advantage of the loose ends in the Black Stars' formation but the Ghanaians fought back to consolidate their gains.
Back from recess the Stars resumed their attack, giving their opponents no room to manoeuvre.
The Stars made a couple of substitutions and played a more compact game to thwart the efforts of the Crocodiles to score a goal. In the 66th minute Prince Tagoe replaced Junior Agogo while Haminu Dramani came on for Sule Ali Muntari in the 80th Minute. Captain Stephen Appiah was also replaced by Eric Bekoe in the 85th Minute.
The Stars enjoyed massive support from the fans, who had travelled from all corners of the country, to cheer them to victory. The 20,000 capacity stadium was filled to capacity by about 12 noon and security personnel well ordered not to allow anymore fans into the stadium to avoid disaster as many were crowded even on the walk-ways. Unconfirmed reports speak about injuries sustained by some soccer fans at about 11.30 am when they tried to force their way through the gates to the stadium.
