Ghana Rugby Team Beats Burkina Faso

The first ever Rugby international Friendly Match in the Ashanti Region, which was designed to introduce rugby to schools in the Region, has finally ended at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium between hosts Ghana and Burkina Faso on Saturday 27th April 2013.

The Black Eagles of Ghana arrived in Kumasi on the evening of Friday 26th April, very much psyched and ready to win this all important game as this might have a significant impact when the two teams again meet at the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) North Division 2 African Cup in June of 2013.

The two teams took turns on the morning of the match day to test drive the playing surface of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in an attempt to acclimatize.
The referee of the day was Mr. William Ntiense; a CAR sanctioned official and the technical director of the Nigeria Rugby Federation, he was supported by the Head of Ghana’s Referees Association; Mr. Ishmael Adama together with others.
The match kicked off at 3:45pm with the visitors holding the host nation off and threatening to score on a few occasions. After about 15 minutes of perseverance and resilience as the visitors pushed hard, Ghana managed to turn the tables as they scored their first points through a drop Kick by Hamza Suleiman.
The Burkinabe to the horror of the fans at the stadium and of the Ghanaian team soon scored a try which put them two points ahead of the host nation. The relentless Ghanaian side after struggling through a very balanced game got the opportunity to score with a penalty which would have earned them 3 more points, but decided to put the Burkina defense to the test and go for an actual TRY which is worth 5 points, and the team managed to beat the defense of the visitors and get a TRY just before the blast of the half time whistle through William Ayeetey. The team then went ahead to score the conversion kick, earning them extra two points. This brought the score to 10 – 5 in favor of Ghana at half time.

In the second half, both teams came back more aggressive and ready to give it their all, Ghana obviously had the better strategy as they managed to beat the defense of their opponents by scoring two more TRYS through William Ayeetey and Hamza Suleiman respectively, and 1 conversion to bury the game at 22 POINTS TO 5.
