Ghana Ladies Open Golf Championship ends on high

The eighth edition of the Ghana Ladies Open Golf Championship ended on a high note at the Achimota Golf Club on Monday with many international golfers participating.

About 45 professional golfers from fifteen different countries took part in the competitive tournament which teed-off on Sunday and ended on Monday.

To climax the two day event, the organizers held a colourful ceremony to award participants who showcased masterclass performance to top their various groups.

Ghana’s Peace Akwei won the Women Seniors with a net score of 85 and was followed by Nigeria’s Funke Mayekodunmi and Esther Antwi from Ghana.

Blessing Abdul from Nigeria won the Women’s Division B ahead of Kenya’s Ndei Wacukab and Ruth Kae to the 2nd and 3rd position respectively. Division B was annexed by Muheri Kamykazi from Kenya, followed up by Emelia Flynt and Ammo Anabywan respectively.

Didi Erfurt won the Supporting Men’s Division which was played on Sunday and was followed up by Joseph Dorh. A special award for Longest Drive went to Alistar Rushton whiles Seidu Foster took home the award for Nearest to the pin.

Captain of the Achimota Golf Club, Peace Akwei disclosed to the media that organizers were overwhelmed with participants from the African continent. She further added that African golfers have the potential of competing with other global players.

“We have some really great lady golfers and they are playing handicaps and they are hitting the ball all the way to the brim so I’m confident they can compete with other global players,” Peace Akwei told the media.

Esther Amedzro, President of the Ghana Lady Golf Union said, “We encourage the mothers to get involved in the game because when the mothers come their children will follow. It takes dedication and time to become a professional golfer but it has enormous health benefits to players and also gives players the opportunity to meet people from all works of life.”


Some of the international golfers who interacted with the media express gratitude to the Ghanaians for their hospitality and promised to visit the country again soon.
