Ghana Blind Sports Federation appeals for financial aid amid huge debt

The Vice President of the Ghana Blind Sports Federation, Sarah Serwaa Asamoah, has called on stakeholders and institutions to come to their aid as the federation struggles with debt crisis.

According to her, the federation organised a National Goalball Championship in Cape Coast for its members.

The tournament brought together over 150 visually impaired athletes representing 15 regions (excluding the Oti Region), however, they incurred losses after the event.

She explained that despite financial support from the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), the Bank of Ghana, and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), the costs of feeding and accommodation led to significant debts, which they are now seeking help to settle.

She added that their budget was GH¢400,000, but GoldBod gave them GH¢80,000, while the Bank of Ghana gave them GH¢30,000, and the GPHA GH¢10,000.

“These are images from our 2025 event where we hosted over 70 visually impaired people, and we incurred losses after the event. We had only three sponsors. Our budget was GH¢400,000, but GoldBod gave us GH¢80,000, Bank of Ghana gave us GH¢30,000, and GPHA gave us GH¢10,000.

"We could not trace even GH¢150 yet we had to do it. Our fear was that GoldBod would take their money back, but we decided not to because we had already incurred losses. Accommodation and feeding were the reasons we went to see the director, and he advised us to do more social media publicity,” Sarah Serwaa told GhanaWeb Sports.

The revelation also came to light when the federation paid a visit to the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, to introduce the executives, provide updates on the Goalball Championship they organized, and address the debts incurred during the event.

Sarah Asamoah disclosed that the federation owes the Egypt Blind Sports Association (EBSA) a participation fee of €14,500 for the 2023 African Goalball Championship, and as a result, the federation can no longer participate in any international competitions until the debt is cleared.

“We owe €14,500 in Egypt, and because of that, we are not qualified to participate in any international games. The pressing issue is to settle the cost of accommodation and feeding,” she added.
