Olympics aim to celebrate golden jubilee with league cup

Accra, Jan 8, GNA - Nana Addo Dankwa III, chairman of the Council of Patrons of Accra Great Olympics said on Thursday that a league triumph for the Ghanaian Blues in the coming season would be a fitting climax to the club's golden jubilee celebrations and asked all Ghanaians who have the club's interest at heart to work towards it.

Speaking to the GNA Sports, the traditional ruler said that objective could only be achieved if there is peace and unity among the ranks of the managers and supporters of the club and called on all lovers of the club to come together as one in pursuit of the lofty goal. He said there is the need to reorganize the structures at the club and make Olympics more attractive to successful members of the society to participate in its funding and administration and cautioned against in-fighting and rancour because continuous resentment among stake holders will discouraged respectable men from coming on board to shoulder the redemption crusade.

Nana Addo Dankwa said the reorganization process, which is being supervised by Mr. Amarkai Amartefio, Swedish Consul-General and a former Commissioner of Sports has reached an advanced stage and very soon, new appointments will be made to oil the administrative machinery of the club.

The paramount chief, who is the Omanhene of Akwapim Traditional Area said the Olympics support base would include men of substance such as Mr. Nick Amartefio, Nana Akuako Sarpong, Agogohene and Mr Martin Dankwah who are willing to lift the club up to dizzy heights.

He said there is the need to broaden the share holding base of the club, as only four of the original eight shareholders remain and promised that cogent steps would be taken at the next Annual General Meeting (AGM) to broaden the base of shareholding in the club.

On recent media reports about the sack of coach Abdul Aziz and the dissolution of the Welfare Committee by David Fugar and Seth Ankrah, the traditional ruler said he agreed intoto with Justice George Lamptey, chairman of the Board of Directors that nobody had been sacked and no appointments had been made.

He said there is the need to strengthen the technical team and beef up the attack of the team in readiness for the championship onslaught but added that nobody had any mandate to sack anybody or dissolve any committee.

The Omanhene called for diplomacy from the people who have been asked to "shepherd" the players in the absence of a management committee as their utterances could fuel the embers of antagonism and derail the collective objective of the club.

On poor attendance at Olympics' matches, Nana said it would soon be a thing of the past because as soon as the team becomes consistent with good results, the fans will return to the stadium, adding, "some people have weak hearts and do not want to have heart attack so they stay out," but if the team is doing well they will all return. 08 Jan 04
