GIS marks annual Sports Day with a difference

Track and field competition was organized for students by the Ghana International School (GIS), a world class international school in Accra, to celebrate its annual sports day on Monday 8th of February, 2016 at the El-Wak Sports Stadium.

Students entered into the spirit of the occasion in a grand way with the athletic oath being administered by the sports prefect, lighting of the spirit flame by the house reps and a 200m march pass by all partakers.

Participants showcased their unity, understanding and will-power in the various forms of sports activities such as long jump and flat and hurdle races to the admiration of their colleagues, parents and teachers.

The School's incoming principal, Mrs. (Dr.) Mary Ashun, presented the annual report and a warm address to welcome students, parents and invited guest present at the event.

Speaking to the press Mrs. Zenabu Akotoh, the athletics coordinator, disclosed that this year's edition of the sports day was different as it involved students in track and field competitions for the first time in the history of the schools.

She expressed gratitude to her colleague teachers and students for their enthusiastic spirit which made the day successful.

Mr. Kwabena Kwakwa, a form three student who took part in the race, expressed excitement after he broke and set a new record for the 1,500m and 400m sprint.

The guest of honor to grace the occasion was the president of Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), Mr. Herbert Mensah who also sponsored the event with some trophies.

The participants were from the school's various houses namely Red, Yellow, Green and Blue where winners in all the categories of race were presented with medals and certificates respectively.

House Yellow competitors displayed spectacular performance on the day and stood out as the overall winners to receive the biggest trophy after all marks were calculated at the end of the event.
