The Chairman of the Ghanaian Referees Association, George Saijah, has disclosed that his organization is no longer responsible for selecting referees for officiating matches in Ghana.

He stated that the referees association used to train and appoint referees for matches, including the Women’s League, Division One League, and the Ghana Premier League. However, they are no longer in charge.

Saijah indicated that for the past two seasons, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been appointing referees to officiate various matches, which has been somewhat challenging.

Speaking to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports on September 30, 2024, the referees association chairman noted that the selection of referees for match officiating has been problematic.

“Orders that come up after the match is over. I'll say our mandate ends when we train these referees.

"Formerly, we were doing it, but for the past two seasons, GFA has taken that, and that is now with them. They do the training and selection of the referees."

There have been criticisms directed at Ghanaian referees over how they handle matches, with most people blaming them for poor officiating, resulting in some stadium issues.
