Accra, July 19, GNA - The Greater Accra Weightlifting Association (GAWA) has commenced preparations for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India, to be held later in the year.
The Association would on July 23, organize a one day weightlifting championship at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex.
Saka Acquaye, Great Accra Regional Sports Development Officer said in a press statement that, the championship is to put the weightlifters in perfect shape for the Games.
He noted that, the championship will prepare the boxers adequately to improve upon Ghana's performance in the last Commonwealth Games in Australia, where the nation placed 11th out of the 71 countries in the sport.
According to Acquaye, outstanding performers will receive attractive cash prizes, as part of efforts to motivate them.
