GAABA to form new boxing syndicate

Accra, March 31, GNA - The leadership of the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) are contemplating forming a new syndicate as part of their quest to promote boxing in the country. The yet to be born syndicate will directly be responsible for both amateur and professional boxing.

Gideon Quartey, Vice - Chairman of GAABA told the GNA Sports on Friday that the move is aimed towards saving the dying spirit of the sport.

"For over 20 years now government has been the main sponsor of boxing and this cannot be allowed to continue all the time without private and corporate sponsorhsip."

The Vice Chairman said that the new body will be expected to seek for sponsorship as well as organize regular championship fights to keep the boxers in good shape for all competitions.

Quartey however made it clear that the new group is not be a rival to the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), but will serve the interest of both amateur and professional boxers in the country.

The GAABA Vice Chairman has therefore requested all gyms, trainers and coaches who are in support of the scheme to attend a meeting at the Prisons Canteen in Accra on Monday, April 2 for deliberations.

Meanwhile, the steam of the Week six of the GAABA league was removed following the refusal of some officials of the Ghana Amateur Boxing team, the Black Bombers to make their members participate in the programme.

Bombers captain Bastir Samir was scheduled to engage an opponent during the sixth week event.

The young pugilist despite their non-participation in the event treated the hundreds of audience to some piece of delightful boxing artistry.

In the Featherweight division, Kwartey Quartey of the Cassius Annan Nettey gym defeated Evans Doudu of the Attoh Quarshie gym with a splits decision, with Sagacious Gym's Victor Entsiwa replicating a similar feat over Saviour Tetteh of the Fit Square Gym in the Middleweight division.

Yaya Afra Sackey of the Sagacious Gym overcame Edward Annor of the Cassius Annan Nettey Gym by a unanimous decision in the Lightweight division, with Wisdom Gym's Amos Denji outclassed Tanko Mandia of the Dade Boxing Gym via a unanimous win in the Light welterweight category. In the Welterweight division, Michael Annani of the De-Oak's Gym defeated Rangers Gym's Abu Iddrisu with a unanimous decision, whilst Iddrisu Yakubu of the Fit Square Gym also defeated by Emmanuel Quarshie of the Attoh Quarshie Gym via a unanimous decision.

Abdulai Rauf of the Bronx Gym out-powered Maxwell Amponsah of the Jah Bless Gym courtesy a split points decision in the Light heavyweight category.
