France : Strasbourg, Amiens gain promotion to Ligue 1

Monaco won the Ligue 1 breaking the dominance of PSG Monaco won the Ligue 1 breaking the dominance of PSG

Strasbourg ended a nine absence from the top flight of French football with a 2-1 over Bourg.

The table toppers needed a dramatic winner to be crowned champions of the Ligue 2 whiles Amien registered a 96th minute winner to seal top flight football in the final match days of the season.

All the top six in the Ligue were potential winners of the championship heading into the final round of the fixtures in the second tier league in France with Strasbourg just one point clear at the summit.

The leaders however held onto their slim advantage with a hard earn 2-1 win over the boggy Bourg side that look destined to spoil the party.

The drama however unfolded in the Amiens versus SC Reims game where a 96th winner from the host moved them from sixth into second and place in the 2017/18 French Ligue 1 season.

The game was tied at 1-1 on the 95th minute , leaving Amiens two clear off the chasing pack in the keenly contested race.

The race however took another U-turn with a last gasp winner from Amiens moving them above Troyes, Lens, Brest and Nimes into the second automatic qualification spot.

The 1-2 away triumph thus guaranteed Amiens a place in the 2018 edition of the French Ligue 1.

Meanwhile Troyes will take on the 18th place team in the top flight in the promotion play off later this month. The unlucky Ligue 2 side painfully missed out on automatic spot but will be hoping to get the better part of either FC Lorient or Bastia when they meet in the play off game.
