Ghanaian born former France captain, Marcel Desailly has emerged as the fans favourite to take over as the head coach of the Black Stars.
The World Cup winner according to some football fans who spoke to FINDER Sports has all the qualities that would make him a great manager of the senior national team.
A new coach for the Black Stars has become necessary in the wake of widespread reportage of the imminent sacking of current coach Goran Stevanovic following a disappointing campaign at this year’s Nations cup in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Goran finished in fourth place with the Black Stars at the competition but post tournament incidents have cast a doubt over his continuous stay with the Stars despite having one more year left on his two-year contract.
If Goran is sacked, the big question is who becomes the next Black Stars coach? Ghanaians feel Desailly fits the bill and must be handed the job when asked who they think can take over the Black Stars going forward.
Some of the fans who spoke to FINDER Sports enumerated some of the advantages Desailly brings on board if he is appointed the next coach of the Stars.
“He has seen it all and played at the top level. He has won the World Cup, the European cup and many league titles so he would be respected by the Ghanaian players’ one fan stressed.
‘I know he has contacts with established sportswear brands like Nike etc so I think Ghana can also benefit from that. He is inexperience but he is a winner and although he played his football for France he is a Ghanaian by birth which I think is good” another fan said.
Other advantages some fans enumerated aside Desailly’s competence for the job includes the fact that he can help most of the players in the local league to get opportunities in France because of his close ties with some of the clubs in France.
Another argument in favour of the 1998 world cup winner is that because he has a home in Ghana, his appointment will liberate the GFA of the burden of paying for rent allowance which is currently $5,000 a month for Goran Stevanovic.
Desailly pulled out of the race for the Black Stars job two years ago after being shortlisted by the FA but with public opinion tilting in his favor, the former AC Milan and Chelsea defender is likely to be the man to lead Ghana to the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil
