Essien returns to pitch at Panathinaikos

The Ghana midfielder could return to action at his Greek club anytime soon following his recent inclusion in group training

Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has resumed regular training sessions at his club Panathinaikos, probably ending a long injury layoff.

The 32-year-old former Chelsea star could register his debut for the Greek giants after joining from AC Milan in a two-year-deal last June.

However, no date or fixture has been revealed for his baptism of fire with the Trifolium.

Coach Andrea Stramaccioni has been tight-lipped on the progress of the Ghanaian, but reports in the local media suggest the former Inter Milan and AS Roma manager could give Essien a trial soon.

Earlier this month reports emerged that Panathinaikos were planning to terminate Essien’s contract for failing to feature in the number of required matches since his arrival.

However, the Athens-based side have not officially confirmed such reports.
