Enugu Rangers, Ismaily for President’s Cup

Nigerian side, Enugu Rangers and Ismaily of Egypt will join two Ghanaian teams for this year’s President Cup slated for the Accra Sports Stadium on Republic Day, July 1.

The two foreign clubs have firmed their decision to participate in the competition that features four teams for the first time.

Alhaji Ali Braimah Raji, Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), organizers of the annual competition told GNA Sports the addition of the two clubs marked the beginning of the dimension his outfit planned to infuse in the contest.

“This is a novelty which we believe will be attractive. This is what our sponsors want, and we are happy to meet their demands. It is also in conformity of the President’s advice to us to broaden the net.”

The Kumasi and Accra stadia have been penciled as venues for the competition which will see two yet-to-be named clubs paired against the visiting teams. The two Ghanaian clubs, according to the GHALCA chairman will be determined through a text poll with football fans voting for their preferred choices.

He said “one of the local clubs will face one of the foreign clubs in Kumasi while the reverse takes place in Accra. The first game will be on Friday, June 28 in Kumasi while the second takes place in Accra the following day between the two others.

“After both games in Kumasi and Accra respectively, the two winners will play each other in the final on July 1, at the Accra Sports Stadium.”

The President's Cup, initiated by the Joseph Yaw Appiah-led GHALCA over a half a decade ago is to honour sitting President and climaxes the Republic Day celebrations.
