Six members of the Eastern Regional Taekwondo team, which participated in the 4th Greater Accra Taekwondo Championship have presented the medals they won to the Eastern Regional Director of Sports at her office at Koforidua.

The championship attracted over 200 athletes from the Eastern, Ashanti, Western and Greater Accra regions as well as participants from Niger and Togo.

The tournament also served as preparations for the Eastern region’s Taekwondo team towards the upcoming National Sports Festival slated for Kumasi early next month.

The Eastern Region team made their presence felt at the Championship, even though they had not participated in any major tournament in the last five years.

Michael Anim won Bronze in the Bantamweight and Featherweight Divisions, whiles Samuel Ayeh-Bekoe won Bronze in the Fin and Fly Division. The other four contestants were eliminated at the quarter final stage in their respective divisions.

The Eastern Regional Sports Director, Mrs Horsu Fianu, congratulated the team for their performance, adding that, though the expectation was to win Gold, their performance at the championship could propel them to fight for laurels in the upcoming National Sports Festival.

She appealed to corporate organizations, individuals and philanthropists in the region to come to their aid by sponsoring the athletes who would be representing the region at the sports festival.

With barely two weeks to the National Sports Festival, the region is yet to receive support to help camp the athletes to prepare for the games.
