E. K. Owusu, Awuni top at Tema Captain’s Prize

E.K. Owusu won the Men’s scratch event and Isaac Awuni claimed top spot in Men group A at last Saturday’s highly organized 2011 Captain’s Prize at the Tema Country Golf Club. Lots of prizes were at stake for the winners of the various divisions as well as a combined cash prize of GH?1,400 for professional players in the competition held in honour of outgone captain Joseph Odei.

Sponsors were also in avalanche as Cal Bank donated all the trophies, PZ Cussons gave all the giveaways / souvenirs, Ghapoha gave cash, Accra Brewery sponsored beer and other drinks, Coca Cola were responsible for minerals, water and soft drinks as well as HaeirThermocool giving out the LCD TVs.

Owusu, who has recently emerged a regular winner on the golf scene, returned 72 net to take home a giant trophy and LCD TV as winner of the men scratch event, beating runner-up P.K. Amenyo by four clear points.

But Owusu says he is not content yet because his main objective is to finish top at the major tournaments this year.

“I’m not tired of winning, this is not a major event. I’ve promised myself that this year I will win Tema Open, Accra Open, Ghana Open. Those are my targets so you should expect more wins from me,” Owusu told * SportsInGhana.com.*

Amenyo returned net 76 to finish second and also take home a trophy and blender with 3rd placed Ernest Opoku also getting a trophy and souvenirs after returning net 77. 4th and 5th and their attached souvenir prizes went to E.K. Ocansey and R.K. Mensah respectively who both returned 78 net.

A trophy and LCD TV were also the prize for Isaac Awuni who returned net 72 to win the men group A competition. George MensahWisborn finished runner-up on 74 net to earn a trophy and masterchef with 3rd placed Noel Hammond who returned net 75 getting a trophy and blender for his efforts.

4th spot went to AduAdjei who beat former captain KwekuOkyere on countback after they all returned 75 net. AduAdjei took home a trophy and souvenirs whilst KwkeuOkyere got a trophy. 6th and 7th were F. Andoh and OffeiAsiedu who both returned 76 net and got souvenirs as prizes.

In the men’s group B, ClaudMaerten finished clear tops, nine shots clear of runner-up OppongApau who finished on net 70. Mr. Maerten took home a trophy and masterchef for returning net 61 whilst Apau received a trophy and souvenirs.

Up in 3rd place and receiving a trophy was Kofi Ampau who was only beaten on countback by Apau but also topped 4th and 5th Hon. Felix Owusu-Adjapong and Richard Agbenu respectively also on countback after they all returned 70 net. Hon. Owusu-Adjapong and Agbenu went home with souvenirs.

The Ladies A division winner was Achimota Ladies captain Leticia Amponsah-Mensah who only beat runner-up Esther Amedzro and 3rd placed Vetch Bempong only on countback after they all returned net 77 with Lady Scientific Florence Etwi-Barimah taking 4th on net 78.

Amponsah-Mensah got a trophy and LCD TV,Amedzro received a trophy and blender whilst both of Vetch Bempong and Lady Scientific went home with souvenirs.

VerenaValuab won the Ladies’ B event after returning 72 net to take home a trophy and masterchef for her prize. 2nd was Allen Conteh who returned net 77 and got a trophy and souvenirs, with Patrina Galley finishing 3rd on net 78. Galley went home with souvenirs, same as Grace Amoah who finished 4thon 80 net.

But the man who went home richest was evergreen Vincent Torgah who beat the professionals field with a score of 64 to take home five hundred Ghana Cedis (GH?500) cash. Good old Brave Mensah received GH?400 (four hundred Ghana Cedis) for being runner-up on a score of 67.

3rd and 4th were Baba Akologo and E.K. Osei who received GH?250each after recording scores of 71 respectively.

Octogenarian K.A. Ohemeng was not left out as he was the winner of a special prize of a trophy on his 81st birthday.
