Ghanaian international Andre Ayew could not get his hands on the BBC Africa Footballer of the year Award for the second time after missing out to Algerian Riyad Mahrez.

Mahrez was named the 2016 BBC Africa footballer of the year after he surpassed the Ghana star as well as three others namely Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Sadio Mane and Yaya Toure.

Andre Ayew who had previously won the award in 2011 was hoping to become the only Ghanaian to have won the accolade on two occasions.

The 26-year-old despite having a good season at Swansea City have struggled since moving to West Ham United.

The Black Stars deputy skipper is yet to find the back of the net after his £20million record transfer from Swansea City in the summer.
