Cosmos Ladies win Rugby Ghana Women’s Cup 2012

Cosmos Ladies have followed in the footsteps of their illustrious men’s side, Cosmos Buffaloes, by emerging convincing winners of the 2012 Ghana Rugby Association (GRA) / Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) Women’s 7s tournament. It was a return to sponsorship of Women’s Rugby in this country by Price Waterhouse Coopers who have been a major supporter of the female division and according to Edward Gomado, a Director of PWC who represented at the University of Ghana Athletics Oval where the competition took place on October 6, they are back for good.

“We love Rugby, we have a history of sponsoring this sport and we are delighted to support the organisation of this competition today. We are committed to supporting the efforts of GRA to unearth more talents and also promote and develop rugby,” Mr.Gomado said in his closing remarks. Grouped in one section comprising 3 teams in the 5-team tournament, Cosmos Ladies began their Group A campaign with a 10-0 win over Floreat A before seeing off the strong opposition of University of Ghana Ladies 10-7 to make the Cup final.

University of Ghana Ladies, playing their first tournament on the same day they were officially outdoored, defeated Floreat A 17-0 in their other group game to make the Plate final where they deservedly earned their consolation via a 20-0 victory against Floreat B.

Floreat B had earlier lost the only Group B encounter 5-10 against Warrior Ladies who thus qualified for the Cup final against Cosmos Ladies. Cosmos Ladies however reserved their best for last by thrashing Warrior Ladies 27-0 in the grand finale to win the huge trophy at stake and bragging rights as they joined their male counterparts who are both Ghana men’s 7s League and gala defending champions. In the end, the success of the day and the role of the sponsors was acknowledged by Gifty Annan-Myers, President of the Ghana Rugby Association, who also took the opportunity to congratulate the Cosmos Ladies champions.

“Well done to Cosmos Ladies, they played very well and deserve to be champions but the biggest cheers go to PWC who have been great friends and partners in our quest to promote and develop rugby,” the Ghanaian Rugby chief told www.sportsinghana.com.

Madam Annan-Myers continued: “They are so committed and have been supporting us for many years and we shall forever remain grateful. We are glad they are back at this crucial time that we want to take women’s rugby a step up.”
