Calls for reactivation of colts soccer in Effutu Area

Winneba, May 18, GNA - The assemblyman for Abasraba/Zongo electoral area in Winneba, Mr. Kofi Taylor, has called on the chiefs, philanthropists and other well wishers in the Effutu Traditional Area to help reactivate the 12 colt football clubs in the area.

He said there was the need to also initiate moves to revive and strengthen the two second division teams in the area - Santos and Diamond football teams, for falling out of existence over the past years.

Mr. Taylor made the call during a friendly match between Windyo FC and Diamond FC at Winneba at the week-end that was won by Windyo FC 1-0 to snatch the trophy donated by the assemblyman.

He regretted that even though the Effutu Traditional area has all the necessary facilities at its disposal to raise a formidable soccer team to represent the community, enough efforts have not been initiated to achieve such a goal.

He said with the establishment of the National Sports College in the traditional capital, Winneba, the area has an advantage of not only developing football and forming clubs but also creating interest in other sports disciplines like, table tennis, lawn-tennis and volleyball among others, to make the community one of the leading sporting communities in the country.

Mr. Taylor also appealed to the District Assembly to team up with the traditional authorities and sports organizers in the area to mobilize young talented soccer stars in an effort to forming a formidable soccer club to represent the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District in the Premier division in the near future.

He said since the District now has many young soccer clubs, a dependable football team could be raised and offered the needed training to bring Winneba and its environs once more to the country's soccer picture.

Barimah Owusu-Kwarteng, who was the guest speaker for the occasion commended Mr. Taylor and the managements of the participating teams for their determination and high sense of initiative in reviving football in the area and urged them to with their efforts at improving soccer and other sporting activities in the area.

He also praised the Member of Parliament for Effutu and others for their contribution in construction of the YOKOHAMA Sports Complex in Winneba

Cash awards of between 50,000 cedis and 100,000 cedis were presented to players for their excellent performance during the match. 18 May 04
