Cabinet approves new sports bill

WINNEBA - A new sports bill that seeks to give more powers to regional and district administrations to handle sports issues in Ghana was given cabinet assent last Thursday.

Mr Sylvester Azantilow, a Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, who made this known at Winneba (about 30 miles west of Accra) on Saturday, said the bill would soon be placed before parliament for discussion.

He was addressing officials and playing bodies of 14 youth teams who participated in a gala competition organised by the MP for Effutu and Deputy Minister of Roads and Transport, Mr Mike Allen Hammah, at the National Sports College, Winneba.

It was meant to inculcate a spirit of oneness among the youth in the Effutu Traditional Area to ensure the rapid socio-economic development of the area. Mr Azantilow said that, under the new sports bill, regional and district sports development and promotion committees would be established to handle all sporting activities effectively at their levels.

Sports infrastructures at regional and district capitals would also be controlled, developed and maintained by the committees, which would be headed by regional ministers and district chief executives.
