Sunyani, (B/A) May 13, GNA - Various Sports Associations in the Brong-Ahafo Region have been inaugurated at the Sunyani Coronation Park with the members charged to organize and assist in the participation of amateur and professional sportsmen and women at the district, regional and national levels.
The Associations included Cycling, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Lawn tennis, Basketball, Boxing, Netball and Women in Sports, Draught, Hockey, Handball, mass sports associations and Association of the Physically Challenged. Mr Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister who inaugurated the Associations emphasized that sports was now a tool for development apart from uniting people from diverse backgrounds and promotion of good health as well.
He tasked the Associations to help identify, provide and maintain sports facilities such as playing fields for use by participants to ensure a solid foundation as well as for mass and social sports. "It would be further appreciated if your Associations could identify and nurture raw talents from the grass root to develop into national stars", the Regional Minister added.
Mr Kofi Duku-Duodu, Regional Sports Development Officer expressed regret that various local sporting associations in the region have not been vibrant in decision making for some years now and entreated members of the Associations to work hard to promote the growth and development of their respective disciplines.
Mr Michael Hinneh-Aframfo, Regional Physical Education Coordinator of the Ghana Education Service (GES) gave the assurance that the GES would involve the various Associations in its sporting activities. 13 May 10
