British Higher Commissioner to Ghana, HE Iain Walker has congratulated Jonathan Mensah on his appointment as new captain for Columbus Crew FC.

The Ghana defender has been named the leader for the MLS side for the 2020 campaign following an impressive spell in the last three seasons.

The 29-year-old becomes the first African-born to captain the Black & Gold.

Mensah is now the first non-American to be handed the armband since Federico Higuain in 2013.

Mensah has been a leader for the team during his time with the club and is a bridge between eras and a well-respected player in the locker room.

The stalwart centre back started his reign with a win as Columbus Crew beat New York City FC 1-0 at home last Sunday.

HE Iain Walker Walker took to his Twitter to congratulate Mensah.

The former Udinese Calcio, Granada, Thonon Evian FC and Anzhi Makachkala defender has been named Defender of the Year for two consecutive times for Crew.
