Bortey to go into coaching

Accra Hearts of Oak great Bernard Don Bortey has revealed his intention of taking up a coaching course to help nurture what he calls “magical goalscorers” for the country.

The former winger – nicknamed the “Serial Killer” during his glory days – due to the serious attacking firepower and goalscoring qualities he possessed says the Ghana premier league lacks proper goalscorers , something that must be addressed.

“Its is something that I’m planning to do. To become a coach and teach these young players the basic skills they need to be productive like I was. How many players can do magic for their teams today when games are tough and difficult to be won? There are few you know.” Bortey told FootballMadeInGhana.com.

“It is my intention to help nurture proper goalscorers for this country”

“When you look at the local league now you won’t get reliable scorers like we used to have in our time. Why? Its because young players of today are not ready to learn. They are not ready to practice on their own”

“For instance when I scored goals from direct corners and from the center circle some people thought I was using some magic to do that but it was all down to training and consistent practices. ” he explained.

“But what they didn’t know was that I started doing these magical things from colts level. So I grew up with that qualities. I watched and learned and that is what I want to inculcate in young Ghanaian players and at the right time you will see me do that.” Bortey continued.

Don Bortey , a crowd puller during the early 2000s, finished joint goal king of the 2002 Ghana premier league on 18 goals alongside Hearts of Oak teammate Charles Taylor.
