Black Stars midfielder Derek Boateng displayed his humorous side when he made jokes about the blackout situation at the Baba Yara stadium during Ghana’s 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho last Friday.
The Dnipro midfielder, who played a key role in the game, took to social networking site twitter to thank football fans for their support during the game but also jokingly advised that fans should not forget to turn off their lights when going to bed in reference to the power failure at the stadium during the game.
“Thank you for your support Ghana! This victory is for you! Good night and turn off the lights ;)))),” Derek tweeted on Friday night. The Black Stars were at their very best in the first game of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers and their first game under Kwesi Appiah who was recently appointed the substantive coach of the national team.
The Stars beat Lesotho 7-0 in a match that was delayed for nearly 90 minutes after a floodlight failure in Kumasi.
The Black Stars were already 4-0 ahead in their Group D opener when the lights failed in the 55th minute, causing huge embarrassment to the country.
Dominic Adiyiah and Jordan Ayew scored twice while captain Sulley Muntari and debutants Christian Atsu and Jeremiah Akaminko added the others.
The government has since launched an investigation into what led to the floodlight failure.
