Officials of Klefe Blue Flames, a Division Three side near Ho in the Volta Region last Saturday went haywire, assaulting match officials in their game against Selion FC.

It was Flames who opened the scoring but caved in shortly due to the tactical superiority of Selion who responded with five classical goals.

Reports indicated that the home-side captain Wilson Moro Adraku led the assault, charging onto the referee and giving him a head but after the fifth goal.

Thereafter, the entire home fans joined the onslaught with sticks, cutlasses and other deadly weapons resulting in the match officials taking to their heels midway in the game. The center referee was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

“It was a moment of madness. We had to run for our lives, leaving our properties behind. You will receive beatings if you are not a native, you dare not stop. How on earth in the 21st century will these things still be happening at match venues?” David Amewose, a sports journalist said on Dzigbordi 87.7 FM.

Reacting to the incident, the vice chairman of the Ho Municipal Football Association James Bond Tumaku said the emergency committee will meet to decide on a sanction.

Meanwhile, sports broadcasters in the region have announced they will boycott all sports-related events in the region involving Klefe until the perpetrators are brought to book.
